The Science of Glassmaking: Eight Centuries of a Magical Art

Rakow Research Library
A display of original materials at the Museum’s Rakow Research Library explores glassmaking knowledge and lore from the 12th through the 19th century. The exhibit features rare books and prints that illustrate furnaces, glassmaking tools, recipes, and glass workers, as well as the objects they produced.

Lunchtime Lecture: Elizabeth Ware Perkins

Masters of Studio Glass: František Vízner

In 1979, The Corning Museum of Glass introduced to the American public the work of the unknown Czech artist, František Vízner. Nearly 30 years later, Vízner, now an internationally acclaimed artist, is presented in Corning as a studio glass master. This exhibition shows a range of Vízner's work in cast glass. His luminous and colorful vessel forms occupy the shifting boundary between function and non-function. Included in Museum admission. Adult admission is $12.50, kids and teens, 19 and under, free.
The Museum and Beyond: Young People at the Corning Museum of Glass

Are you between the ages of 14 and 19, interested in learning more about opportunities to get involved at the Museum, and thinking about ways to integrate the arts into your future? Find out more about the Museum Explainer, Junior Curator, and Youth Volunteer programs. Meet teens already involved, and talk with artists and Museum professionals. Guest speaker, artist Thérèse Lahaie, will discuss her work, in which she attempts to integrate science and movement, and her special project, a solar powered mural she created with a group of California teens. 7:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m. The Studio Lecture Room. Meet the Artist: Therese Lahaie

Hear from artist, Therese Lahaie, who creates kinetic sculptures using glass. By giving her pieces movement, Lahaie aims to animate the glass and call attention to the unique ability of the material to capture light. Her pieces, which are colorless and assume the hues of water, are meant to be meditative and contemplative. They are works that, Lahaie says, "invite the viewer to focus on the fundamental rhythms of heartbeat and breath, expansion and contraction, which shape and sustain our lives," The lecture begins at 6:00 p.m. in the Museum Auditorium. 2300°: Ornament-a-Palooza

At 2300°, glass gets interesting, and so do things at The Corning Museum of Glass. Kick off the holiday season with a festival of ornament making. Watch flameworkers create delicate ornaments at torches throughout the Museum, and see glass artist Christian Thirion at work on the Hot Glass Show stage. Contemporary Glass Gallery and Changing Exhibitions Gallery
Voices of Contemporary Glass showcases the 230 objects, by 87 international artists, that constitute the Museum’s recently acquired Heineman Collection. The exhibition will present the collection in the historical context of international studio glass, and focus on the accomplishments and “voices” of individual artists. Artists in the collection include Howard Ben Tré, Dale Chihuly, Stanislav Libenský and Jaroslava Brychtová, Harvey Littleton, Klaus Moje, and Toots Zynsky.
