In the 1930s, the top designers at the Orrefors Glassworks were Simon Gate (Swedish, 1883-1945), Edward Hald (Swedish, 1883-1980) and the young Viktor (Vicke) Emanuel Lindstrand (Swedish, 1904-1983). A painter, Lindstrand first designed vases with enameled decoration, gradually shifting to his signature approach to engraving, in which his subjects or decorative elements are suspended in the glass, much as if they were suspended in water. He was a prolific designer whose work exploited the uniquely fluid quality of glass.
