Christophe Côme began his artistic career as a sculptor. Working primarily in bronze, he made sculpture and jewelry until the mid-1990s, when his focus shifted to furniture forms. After visiting a glass studio in 1995, he began to incorporate glass into his designs, expanding his practice and creating a new expression for glass in furniture. The artist’s sculptural background is evident in his robust yet refined designs for furniture and lighting. His inspirations range from architectural wrought iron to contemporary sculpture to objects found in nature. Starting with conventional iron, he shapes and defines his forms, focusing on texture and oxidation to produce distinctive finishes. He pairs the metal with hot-formed ingot-shaped glass elements, molded glass lenses, or blown glass tubes. Heir to a centuries-long tradition of fine furniture-making in France, Côme transforms his seemingly heavy, industrial materials into elegant shapes of refined proportions and exacting craftsmanship. Combining the emotive qualities of studio craft with a classic modernist design style, his functional objects occupy the liminal terrain between craft and design.
