Biography: Kerry Sinanan

Kerry Sinanan

Dr. Kerry Sinanan is recipient of the 2021 Rakow Grant for Glass Research for the project “Monograph: Transparency and the Black Atlantic: Glass, and the Material Culture of Whiteness.” Sinanan will explore how the materiality of glass, and its emerging the visual rhetoric, were fundamental to the forging of anti-black, white supremacy at the heart of Enlightenment culture. Her study investigates the visual and material culture of the eighteenth century to focus on glass’s relationship to slavery, global trade, and the construction of race in the Caribbean, Europe, and Black Atlantic world. This project details the emergence of glass alongside the transatlantic slave trade, and its visual rhetoric that is part of the history of race. Kerry Sinanan is Assistant Professor at UT San Antonio.
