Biography: Roger Thomas

Roger Thomas
Roger Thomas

Roger Thomas began to work with stained glass in California in 1973, and a decade later, he turned to fusing. In 1988, he moved his studio to Portland, Ore., where he continued to experiment with fused glass as a pictorial medium and to develop methods of dealing with what he called “the fused glass palette.” Thomas approached glass as a sculptural medium and was easily distracted by color, design, and structure. He extracted the essence of form with a graphic shorthand in order to communicate his view of the world to others.

He exhibited his “paintings in glass” and taught his techniques in the United States and other countries.
