Online Course: Exploring Kiln Cast & Cold Worked Glass

September 27 - December 6, 2021 12:00pm to 1:30pm
Kiln Working and Cold Working
Ten-Week Session

This ten-week online class offers a unique approach to learning the processes of kiln casting and cold shaping for glass. Students will develop knowledge in formulating and using mold recipes for glass casting, preparing firing programs for specific kilns and works, as well as an extensive approach to cold forming and finishing techniques for glass sculptures. Each week of this class will be broken down into steps to guide students, while encouraging them to apply their own ideas to set projects and tasks. During the class there will also be time to discuss approaches to reflective thinking that help develop each artist’s voice.

Some experience with glass, ceramics, or sculpture is required. As this is an online class, it will be helpful for participants to have access to a computer-controlled kiln for casting and a space for mold making and cold working. Alternately, students without these facilities can gather knowledge to apply at a later time.

The class will be delivered via weekly video conferences that incorporate presentations, live demonstrations, and class discussions. Classes take place Mondays, 12–1:30 pm EDT, beginning September 27, 2021. There is no class on Monday, October 11 in observance of Indigenous People’s Day. Students registered for this course should have a reliable internet connection during class hours and a computer or tablet that can support video and audio communication. All students will have an opportunity for an online orientation with Studio staff prior to September 27 to ensure connectivity.
