Retail Shops Area Coordinator - Corning Home

Supports retail management of The Corning Museum of Glass shops, delivering world-class customer service, assisting visitors in the selection of appropriate merchandise and providing accurate information about the Museum’s offerings.  Leads the daily operations in assigned shops including training, inventory control, stock keeping, housekeeping and operation of the Point of Sale (‘POS’) equipment.


  • Ensures responsive customer service and sales in all assigned areas.
  • In the absence of other Area Coordinators, coordinates operations and responds to any customer service issues that may arise in any area.
  • Provides visitors with accurate information about the merchandise and the Museum’s variety of activities for guests.
  • Supports store management in the orientation of new retail associates and assists in training as needed.
  • Ensures that all associates receive timely and accurate information necessary to provide quality service and maintain operational control.
  • Operates all POS equipment and accurately performs all required transactions.
  • Executes procedures associated with opening and closing of the shops including reconciliation of the end-of-day register accounts.
  • Approves warehouse transfer requests in order to maintain appropriate stock levels on the selling floor and in the stock area.
  • Ensures that all stock and paperwork are maintained in accordance with inventory control policies and procedures.
  • Assists store management and the Inventory Control Specialist in the preparation and execution of cycle counts. Immediately communicates inventory issues to the Inventory Control Specialist.
  • Leads preparation and execution of the annual physical inventory for all assigned areas.
  • Identifies slow-moving items to be considered for discontinuance.
  • Provides store management and buying staff feedback from visitors about ideas for new merchandise.
  • Leads merchandise moves and maintains visual display standards to maximize sales and enhance shops.
  • Ensures that all merchandise is correctly ticketed and there is properly placed signage about promotions.  
  • Recommends visual presentation when appropriate.
  • Performs appropriate floor moves as business dictates and checks visual merchandising.
  • Ensures appropriate visual requirements are met for all retail special events.
  • Adheres to all safety, housekeeping, customer service, accounting and information security policies and procedures.
  • Protects and controls all Museum assets against damage.
  • Consistently demonstrate the Museum’s values in all interactions with colleagues, staff, volunteers, and the public.
  • Supports and amplifies the Museum’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access.


  • Minimum one-year experience working with the public in a sales or retail position.
  • Ability to represent the Museum professionally and consistently demonstrate the Museum’s values.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Excellent communication and listening skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.
  • Dependable with a strong work ethic; respects and meets deadlines on time.
  • Ability to correctly analyze and understand sales reports.
  • Ability to operate a POS system and handle cash accurately.
  • Ability to work with and respect many different cultures.
  • Some evenings, holidays and weekends required; flexible schedule essential.
